Vintage Red Doll in A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Once I sat upon a promontory,
And heard a mermaid, on a dolphin’s back,
Uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath,
That the rude sea grew civil at her song;
And certain stars shot madly from their spheres,
To hear the sea-maid’s music.

Oberon, King of the Fairies

A Midsummer Night’s Dream, scene I, Act II, William Shakespeare.

The old rag dolls of poor girls were made of colorful materials like potato sacks filled with sawdust, and even then sure they were so valuable for them as portals to their dreams, as the stars for a midsummer night.
